Huskies defeat BU women

Updated: September 20, 2009
The Northeastern Huskies rose to 5-1-0 on the season as they defeated BU 1-0 in a close match at Parsons Field.

"Our goal was to accomplish something we've never done before," head coach Ed Matz said after the game, "and that was to beat BU at home in the regular season."

Northeastern's shutout of the Terriers was its first win against the rival program in five years. BU is now 2-4-2 on the season.

The game's only goal came nine minutes into the first half as freshman Sandra Magnusdottir dished a crisp pass to Veronica Napoli, who tucked a low shot past BU goaltender Janie Reilly. It was Napoli's first goal of the season, and Magnusdottir's second assist in as many games.

The remainder of the match was even, with both teams showing spurts of offensive intensity. BU forward Farrell McClernon banged a shot off of the crossbar with five minutes remaining, as BU went into over-drive while the clock wound down. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon made a diving save on BU's Corie Osher with a minute left to earn her fourth shutout in six games this season. Gordon now ranks third all-time at Northeastern with 11 career shutouts.

The Huskies travel to Maine this Sunday for their final non-conference game of the season. The game will be at Alumni Field, in Orono, Maine, at 1 p.m.
