Illinois State women defeat Butler

September 26, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS — Four Redbirds tallied their first points of the season to lead the Illinois State (3-5-1) women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Butler (4-7-0) in its first road win of the season. Raquel Rattray, Heather Sterling and Mary Sahm all netted their first goals of the season, while Kristin Cooley and Sterling recorded their first assists as Redbirds.

Sterling led the Redbirds in points with three, while Rattray led the Redbirds in shots with five.

“I think Rocky had a nice goal to start the game off,” said head coach Drew Roff. “The goal that really stands out to me would be the second one by Heather Sterling. She was able to get her first collegiate goal on a great play. She stole the ball from the defender, pushed it to the inside and just hit a rocket from 20 yards out over the goalkeeper’s head. That goal helped us going into halftime. We haven’t been able to get that early goal very often this season, and it changed the game.”

The Redbirds started the game strong, leading 2-0 at the half. Rattray made ISU’s first goal from 10 yards out off a corner kick by Cooley 29 minutes into the game. Sterling scored the Redbirds’ second goal as her shot deflected off the crossbar to score 11 minutes later.

The Redbird defense held the Bulldogs to only two shots on the first half, while the Redbird offense had seven.

In the second half, it was a shootout between the Bulldogs and the Redbirds. Butler’s first goal of the game came from a 35 yard shot by Molly Kruger just five minutes into the second half. The Redbirds responded with a goal of their own by Sahm off an assist from Sterling 79 minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Butler’s Lindsay Fox netted the Bulldog’s second goal with Carrie Twyman getting the assist. On the game, ISU outshot Butler, 14-7.

Katie Grill-Donovan made her first start this season in the net for the Redbirds, recording one save and two goals allowed. Jessica Schein recorded five saves and three goals allowed as Butler’s goalkeeper.

With the win, the Redbirds lead the all-time series against Butler, 4-2-0.

The Redbirds continue their weekend road trip Sunday, when they travel to Morehead State. Kickoff is set for noon.
