September 29, 2009
BOSTON - The Boston University women’s soccer team (5-4-2, 1-0-0 AE) opened its America East slate with a three-goal outburst to defeat Binghamton (3-4-1, 0-1-0 AE), 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Senior Taleen Dimirdjian netted two of the Terriers’ goals, which were the first of her career, while junior Corie Halasz found the back of the net for the first time this season.
Dimirdjian got the Terriers on the board early with her first collegiate goal in the fifth minute off a set piece from sophomore Jessica Luscinski, while Halasz added insurance in the 16th minute off another corner kick from Luscinski. Dimirdjian completed the scoring in the second half when senior Emily Pallotta dumped the ball into the box, which Dimirdjian on-timed into the back of the net.
Senior Janie Reilly finished the game with two saves for her second shutout of the season.
BU struck early with a goal in the 5th minute of action, as Luscinski sent a lob into the 18-yard box off a corner kick that Dimirdjian got on the end of after a flurry in front of the net for her first goal of her career. Ten minutes later, Dimirdjian nearly struck again on a header directly in front of the net that grazed past the far left post.
Halasz made it a two-goal advantage when she took a short corner from Luscinski, weaved through a handful of defenders then unleashed a hard strike to the upper left corner of the net in the 16th minute.
The Terriers set pieces continued to be a strong suit for them during the game, as senior Farrell McClernon nearly headed home a goal in the 30th minute, as Halasz sent in a perfectly placed corner kick that she got a head on but the Binghamton defense ushered it away. Sophomore Cynthia Warman got in on the offensive action in the 40th minute with a well-placed strike to the far right corner that Binghamton’s Jen McEachron stretched out to stop.
Dimirdjian made it a three-goal game in the 53rd minute when Pallotta crossed the ball through the box, which ricocheted off a defender leaving it for Dimirdjian to one-time it in the net for her second goal of the game. Following the third goal, the Terriers’ defense packed it in for the remainder of the game, holding Binghamton to just four total shots.
The Terriers held a commanding 16-4 advantage in shots and 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
BU will look to keep its three-game winning streak alive when it heads to New Hampshire on Thursday (Oct. 1) at 3 p.m.
