NEWTON, Mass. – Siena’s Emery Welshman ended nearly 104 minutes of scoreless action with his first collegiate goal as the visiting Saints defeated
Boston College in double overtime, 1-0.
Welshman tallied a game-high four shots for the Saints, who improve to 5-3-1.
Juniors Joe Tavernese and Joe Tempone assisted on the score, which came with 6:10 remaining in the second overtime period. It was the lone Saint shot taken during the 13:50 of sudden-victory, overtime action.
Boston College (5-4-0), which entered the game victorious in its previous four, attempted four shots during the overtime periods – one each from Kyle Bekker, Patrick Chin, Colin Murphy and Conor Fitzpatrick – and outshot the visiting Saints 14-13 in the game.
Bekker and Chin each attempted two shots in the contest. Senior Mor Avi Hanan attempted a team-high three shots, including the lone BC shot on Siena freshman goalkeeper Phil Chabot.
BC’s Justin Luthy totaled five saves in goal in the defeat, the team’s first since Sept. 11 at fourth-ranked Maryland.
Siena earned a 6-2 edge in corner kicks in the game.
Both teams enjoyed numerous scoring chances prior to the gamewinner but did not convert.
Sophomore Edvin Worley and freshman Charlie Rugg each hit hard left-footed strikes that sailed just past or over the goal. Rugg and Murphy put together an exceptional scoring bid with less than five minutes in regulation on a give-and-go to a cross that rolled through the box and into open space.
Welshman nearly lifted the Saints up one goal but his shot from 14 yards was blocked by BC fullback Sacir Hot with 30 minutes to play in regulation.
Next, Boston College will play at No. 24 NC State on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
