Saint Louis women defeat UMass

Updated: October 4, 2009
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis(w) netted a season-high four goals, including two by Andrea Barklage (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word), and held Massachusetts to three shots Friday night in a 4-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens snapped a two-game winless skid and improved to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the A-10. UMass, which brought a three-game winning streak and five-game unbeaten streak into the proceedings, fell to 3-5-2, 2-1-0 in the A-10.

Barklage and Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word) tied for game-high honors with five shots apiece as SLU outshot UMass 28-3 overall and 14-2 in shots on goal. Brazill’s five shots are a career high. The Billikens did not allow a shot in the first half as they built a 3-0 cushion.

Brazill tallied the only goal the Bills would need at the 13:46 mark, assisted by Ashley Hayes (St. Louis/Incarnate Word) and Barklage. Hayes began the play with a well-flighted corner kick, Barklage attempted a header from close range that almost found the mark, and Brazill tapped it in for her first goal of the season.

Barklage made it 2-0 at 36:26. Susan Frederickson (St. Louis/St. Joseph’s) sent in a beautiful ball from the left side, well outside the 18, and Barklage headed it in from in front for her third marker of the year.

Later in the first half, Sally Sinclair (St. Louis/Cor Jesu) got into the act with her first goal of the season. Kelly Waeckerle sent a cross from the left side to Sinclair on the deep right flank, and Sinclair launched a laser from a tough angle that tucked inside the far post at 43:09 for a 3-0 SLU lead at the break.

Barklage concluded the scoring at 66:19, notching her second goal of the evening and fourth of the season with a header from Brazill off a restart.

Waeckerle and Julia Bradenberg (St. Louis/Ursuline) registered four shots apiece, while Allison Hu (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) fired a career-high three shots. Hayes also recorded three shots.

Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) made two saves and was joined in the shutout, the Billikens’ sixth of the year, by senior Amber Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East).

SLU returns to the Hermann Stadium pitch Sunday, hosting A-10 opponent Rhode Island at 1 p.m.
