Oregon State men lose to UCLA

Updated: October 5, 2009

Corvallis, Ore – The Oregon State men’s soccer team opened up Pac-10 Conference play Friday when it took on the No. 4 UCLA Bruins at Paul Lorenz Field in a 3-1 losing effort.

"It wasn’t a 3-1 game as far as effort is concerned," Oregon State men’s soccer head coach said following the match. "We probably didn’t take our chances. We had five chances in the first half and we made one play, they had one chance they made one play."

Oregon State had nine shots in the game but only had three in the second half. Only three of those nine shots were on goal. UCLA had 10 shots, five of which were on goal.

The Beavers (4-3-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-10 conference) scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute of the game. Colin Mitchell crossed the ball from the left to the right side of the goalie box where Brian Ramsey punched the ball to the lower left side of the net for his first goal of the season.

UCLA (6-1, 1-0) got on the board as Kyle Nakazawa scored his fifth goal of the season on assists from Michal Roman and Eder Arreola evening the match at 1-1 which was the score at the half.

The Bruins added two goals in the second half one by a header by Ryan Hollingshead with Nakazawa on the assist and the other on an unassisted shot by Kakazawa, both shots were on restarts.

"They came out hard in the second half like I thought they would and we gave up two goals on two restarts," Simmons said. "Our guys battled hard but those mistakes, however small, are things that we have to do better on."

The Beavers match up with their next Pac-10 opponent in San Diego State Sunday, October 4 at Paul Lorenz Field with a 1pm start.
