Louisville men beat DePaul

Updated: October 6, 2009
The No. 17/20 Louisville men’s soccer team defeated DePaul 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago.    It is the first time the Cardinals have scored six goals in a match since they defeated Belmont 6-1 on Oct. 16, 1999.  It was also the first time Louisville has won at DePaul since 1997.

“I thought we did a good job of applying pressure early in the game,” said head coach Ken Lolla.  “We were also able to finish on the chances we had early as well.  We were able to follow up with a good second half and score a few more goals.”

The Cardinals got on the board early when sophomore Colin Rolfe connected in the fourth minute of play from a long pass to jump start the Cardinal attack.  Junior Mark Knight connected three feet in front of the goal to give the Cards a cushion in the 13th minute.

Knight found the net again in the 16th minute with a scramble in front of the DePaul net.  Less than four minutes later freshman Paolo DelPiccolo scored on a rebound to put the Cards up 4-0 in the first period.

Louisville finished the first period with an 8-2 shot advantage and a 1-0 corner kick advantage.    DePaul’s keeper Joe Ferrari finished with two saves in the period while Cardinal keeper Andre Boudreaux finished with one save.

The Cardinals held DePaul to just one shot in the second period. Sophomore Kenney Walker scored from 25 yards out in the 55th minute. Freshman Buck Tufty connected on a shot from 25 yards out to wrap up the Cardinal scoring in the 87th minute of play.

Louisville finished the match with a 13-3 shot advantage and while DePaul held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.   Louisville finished the match with 11 shots on goal while holding DePaul to just one.  Boudreaux finished with one save and his fifth shutout of the season.  Ferrari finished with five saves.

The Cardinals will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 7 as they host the sixth ranked USF Bulls in Cardinal Park.
