UNC Wilmington men draw with Old Dominion

Updated: October 6, 2009
NORFOLK, Va. – Junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth recorded his third shutout of the season with four saves as UNC Wilmington battled 19th-ranked Old Dominion to a double-overtime scoreless draw at the ODU Soccer Stadium on Saturday.

The Seahawks moved to 4-2-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. ODU, meanwhile, moved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league.

“It was a tightly contested game against a nationally-ranked opponent,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “The result could have gone either way tonight, but I’m pleased with the effort of the team this evening.”

Duckworth lowered his goals against average to 0.52 for the season with the clean sheet.

In a very evenly played match, ODU held a narrow 13-10 advantage in shots, but UNCW recorded six corner kicks to the Monarchs’ five.

Evan Newton made three stops on the night in goal as ODU posted its fifth shutout of the campaign.

It was UNCW’s third straight double overtime game and the fourth in its last five. During that stretch, the Seahawks have posted a 1-1-2 mark with the loss coming at 12th-ranked Duke.

UNCW concludes its brief two-game CAA swing on Oct. 7 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Georgia State in Atlanta.
