October 6, 2009
BOSTON - Senior Samuel Appiah scored two goals and the defense held the opponent to zero shots on goal, as the 15th-ranked Boston University men's soccer team defeated Stony Brook, 3-0, on Saturday night at Nickerson Field. With the victory in the America East opener, the Terriers improve to 7-2-2, while the Seawolves fall to 1-8-2.
Named America East player of the game, Appiah put the Terriers in the lead for good at 21:40 when rifled in a shot from 25 yards after receiving a pass outside the box off sophomore Michael Bustamante's corner kick. At 24:06, Appiah scored his second of the game and third of the week after posting a goal and assist during BU's 3-3 draw at No. 23 Brown on Wednesday.
The co-captain is now second on the team in goals and points with four and seven, respectively. Team leader Aaron O'Neal has 17 points after recording an assist on the second goal.
Bustamante extended his lead in assists to seven when he drove from near midfield into the box on a counter attack to set up freshman Nick Prunier. Just facing the goalie, Prunier found an opening and fired past a diving Stefan Manz for his first goal of the year to put BU ahead, 3-0, at 42:42.
The Seawolves never attempted a shot in the first half and ended up with four in the contest, as the Terriers outshot them, 12-4. SBU's AE player of the game Wilber Bonilla had a close attempt at the far post but was wide. BU also had the edge in corner kicks, 5-0.
Senior goalie Hrafn Davidsson played 75:49, and redshirt-freshman Trevor McManamon played the last 14:11 to record BU's sixth shutout of the season. Manz played the entire first for the Seawolves, recording two saves, and Anthony Rogic posted three in the second half.
