UNC Wilmington men beat Georgia Southern

October 9, 2009

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Shaun Utterson scored his first career goal as UNC Wilmington slipped past upset-minded Georgia State, 1-0, in Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer action at Panthersville Stadium on Wednesday.

The Seahawks improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the CAA, while the Panthers fell to 2-4-1 and remained winless in conference play at 0-3.

“It’s a difficult place to play and we had opportunities that we should have converted,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “It was a good three points to earn.”

Utterson’s goal game in the 76th minute when he collected a corner kick by junior Tyler Wheaton and knocked it past GSU keeper Vincent Foermer to give UNCW the only goal it would need. With the assist,

Wheaton has now recorded at least one point in each of the last three matches.
UNCW played the final 8:56 down a man after junior Daniel Roberts was served his second yellow caution of the game and was sent off.

Sophomore Brandon Miller posted his second shutout of the season and needed just two saves as the defense limited GSU’s looks on goal. Miller, who was making his fourth start of the season, helped the Seahawks avert overtime with a key save on a head by GSU’s Stephen Minyono in the 86th minute.

Offensively, the Seahawks held a 14-10 advantage in shots and an 11-6 lead in corner kicks on the evening.
UNCW returns to action on Oct. 10, when it hosts Northeastern at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, UNCW will honor the 2008 Seahawks by unveiling the program’s first-ever CAA Regular Season championship banner.
