Loyola (MD) women defeat Marist

Updated: October 10, 2009
Baltimore, Md. - Freshman Nicole Schiro put in a header after receiving a perfect serve from junior Taylor Santypal with 40 seconds remaining in the first half as the Loyola (MD) women's soccer team remained unbeaten in MAAC play with a 1-0 home win Friday afternoon over Marist.

Schiro's goal gives her a team-high five on the season, three in conference play, as Loyola improved to 8-4-2 overall and 4-0-0 in conference play. Marist fell to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in MAAC contests.

The Greyhounds dominated the game from a time of possession standpoint, outshooting the Red Foxes, 15-6. Marist was unable to get a shot off in the second stanza thanks to great effort by the entire defensive backfield. Loyola also held a seven to zero advantage on corner kicks.

Senior goaltender Brittany Henderson made a pair of saves for Loyola for her second straight shutout and league-high fifth of the season.

Marist goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini made three saves in the loss.

The Greyhounds will look to win their fifth straight on Sunday afternoon when they host Siena in MAAC play at 1 o'clock. Loyola is 18-1-2 all-time against the Saints and is unbeaten in the series at home (8-0-2).
