October 10, 2009
ST. LOUIS – Junior Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word) registered a goal and three assists Friday to power St. Louis(w) to its second four-goal outburst in three games and a 4-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Xavier.

The five points and three assists are career highs for Brazill, who has nine points on the season and is tied for the team lead with five helpers. Her performance helped put the Billikens, whose 5-1-1 record in their last seven outings includes a current season-best three-game winning streak, above .500 for the first time this season at 6-5-2. SLU improved to 3-1-1 in the A-10. Xavier fell to 2-10-1, 1-3-1.

Junior Christina Brown (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) netted the first goal of her collegiate career in the sixth minute to give the Billikens all the scoring they would need. Senior Kristen Sapienza (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s) scored in a second consecutive game after drilling the game-winner against Rhode Island last Sunday, and sophomore Andrea Barklage (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) notched her team-leading fifth goal of the year. Senior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) tied a career high with two assists and now shares the team lead with Brazill.

Sophomore Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and senior Amber Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) shared the goalkeeping duties. Perry did not face a shot on goal in her 68 minutes, while Zdanovec made two saves in 22 minutes to preserve SLU’s third straight shutout and sixth in seven games. The Billikens did not allow a shot in the first half and out-shot the Musketeers 20-8 for the game, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Saint Louis also earned a 6-0 edge in corners.

The Bills got on the board at 5:26, when Brown collected the rebound of Brazill’s shot that hit the post and found the mark. SLU carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.

During a span of 6:23 early in the second stanza, the Billikens found the back of the net three more times. Waeckerle assisted Brazill to make it 2-0 at 48:11, and Sapienza followed with a 20-yard strike off a corner kick, assisted by Brazill, for a 3-0 SLU cushion at 50:25. Barklage’s goal from Waeckerle and Brazill at 54:34 concluded the scoring.

The Billikens conclude their road trip Sunday, taking on A-10 co-leader Dayton at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
