Charlotte women draw with Dayton
October 10, 2009
DAYTON, OH - In a battle of the top two teams in the Atlantic 10, the Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team (10-2-1, A-10: 4-0-1) battled Dayton (8-0-5, A-10: 4-0-1) to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Dayton’s rain drenched soccer field. The 49ers defense behind senior goalkeeper Lauren Brown recorded their ninth shutout of the season. With the tie, the 49ers improved their unbeaten streak against A-10 competition to 21 games.
"It was a classic game between two very good teams," Charlotte coach John Cullen said. "The conditions were awful since it has not stopped raining since we arrived in Dayton yesterday. Both teams had moments when they were in control. Tonight’s game was a battle between two teams that refused to lose."
The story of the game was the 49ers defense. Dayton recorded 30 shots with 11 on goal but the 49ers defense behind the play of Brown and defenders Katie Davies, Danielle Mayeaux, Megan Minnix and Whitney Bryant posted their fourth straight shutout. Brown recorded a season-high 11 saves in the game.
"I was pleased with another clean sheet which was our fourth in a row," Cullen said. "Brown was exceptional tonight in treacherous conditions. I was particularly pleased with her handling of the ball. She made several big saves in the game. It was just a very good all-around performance by Brown and our defense."
Charlotte finished the game with 11 shots with six of those being on goal. Macky Wingo, Whitney Weinraub and Oni Bernard had several great scoring chances in the game but their shots with either stopped by Dayton’s goalkeeper Katherine Boone or blocked by a Dayton defender. Wingo led the 49ers with three shots. While, Weinraub added two shots to the 49ers attack.
The 49ers continue their weekend road trip in the state of Ohio when they battle Xavier on the road, Sunday, October 11 at 11 am.
