Jacksonville women draw with Florida Gulf Coast
October 10, 2009
FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Oct. 9, 2009 The Jacksonville Dolphins played 110 minutes on a hot, muggy afternoon in Fort Meyers, Fla. against Florida Gulf Coast but a winner could not be decided.
The Dolphins (6-6-1, 3-1-1 Atlantic Sun) drew with the Eagles (8-4-2, 3-1-1), 1-1, in a game that saw the visitors uncharacteristically outshot, 19-9.
Freshman midfielder Becca Massip scored her second goal of the season in the 81st minute on a great ball from redshirt-sophomore midfielder Liz Fink. Massip's goal tied the game at 1-1 with the Eagles scoring eight minutes earlier when Linsey Haw chipped a ball over a sliding Alexa Rooney.
"I'm very happy with the effort we put forth today" said head coach Brian Copham. "We played 110 strong minutes against a very good team on a very hot day. Our defense played great the whole game and we'll look to take three more points on Sunday."
In extra time, the Dolphins managed only one shot on goal while the Eagles kept the pressure on, taking seven. Sophomore Rooney made five saves in the game while Massip led the team in shots with three, two on goal.
The Dolphins are back in action on Sunday at 4 p.m. when they take on Stetson in Deland, Fla.
