Northwestern women fall at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern registered a double-digit shot total for the second consecutive game but was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell, 2-0, at Penn State Friday.

The Nittany Lions (6-5-1, 2-1-0 Big Ten) scored a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes of the match then held off a NU attack that took 12 shots, including three by senior Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames). Palo recorded one of Northwestern’s two shots on goal in the 16th minute and Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) put the other on frame in the 72nd.

Danielle Toney opened the scoring for the Nittany Lions in the 3rd minute of the game. Katie Schoepfer assisted on the goal, then added a tally of her own in the 11th minute when Toney returned the favor with an assist.

Redshirt freshman Kelsey Bertamus (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) returned to action for Northwestern in the loss, seeing game action for the second time this season. Bertamus played 24 minutes Friday – her longest outing since suffering a season-ending injury in the 2008 season opener against Nebraska.

Junior Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made five saves in the game for the ’Cats (4-7-2, 1-2-1).

Northwestern returns to action Sunday at No. 25 Ohio State. The match will be televised live on the Big Ten Network at 11 a.m. CT.
