Washington State women defeat Seattle

Updated: October 12, 2009
SEATTLE – Ashley Johnson and Tiara Pittman scored second half goals and Washington State posted a 3-2 win at Seattle in nonconference women’s soccer, Sunday.

Maggie Dougher added a first half goal, the first of her collegiate career, for the Cougars (8-3-1). WSU’s three goal scorers entered the match with three goals combined this season.

“Something that has been good about our season is the balanced way we have scored goals and today was a testament to that,” Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. “It was a big emotional and physical game Friday night (against Washington) and to come back today with a win in a tough environment on Seattle’s Senior Day speaks to the character of our team.”

Dougher put WSU on top 1-0 in the 18th minute with a goal from the right side on an assist from Elysse Van Leer. Seattle (5-9-1) tied the match on a Jordan Salisbury header off a corner kick in the 32nd minute.

The match remained deadlocked 1-1 until the 71st minute when Johnson put the Cougars on top with a header off a Mallory Fox corner kick.

Just over two minutes later, Fox’s sent a free kick toward the goal that was headed by Kiersten Dallstream and redirected by Pittman for her third goal of the season.

In the 80th minute, Kara Kuttler tallied an unassisted goal to pull the Redhawks within 3-2, but the Cougars, who held a 16-8 advantage in shots, were able to close out the nonconference portion of their schedule with a victory.

Washington State play at Arizona State, Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Mountain/Pacific in a Pacific-10 Conference match.
