La Salle women defeat Rhode Island

October 14, 2009
KINGSTON, RI - Melanie Gamble netted the first goal then assisted on the game winner, scored by Erin Brennan, to help La Salle Women's Soccer to a 2-1 victory at Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Explorers have now won two straight after starting league play winless in their first four contests and have gotten themselves back in the mix of the Atlantic 10 standings.

Gamble opened the scoring in the match heading in a corner kick from Traci DePasquale in the 40th minute to give La Salle a 1-0 lead.

For Gamble, it was her fourth of the season and 15th career goal in the Blue and Gold, putting her in a tie for 10th place on the school's all-time goal scoring list. It was DePasquale's ninth assist of 2009, the fourth-most in a single season at the school and her 27th of her career.

La Salle (8-5-2, 2-3-1 A-10) took a one-goal lead into the half and added a second goal in the 60th minute. Brennan took a throw-in from Gamble and beat Ram keeper Tara Murphy for the eventual game winner.

It would be Brennan's second game-winning goal of the season and her fourth overall, while Gamble notched her 10th career assist and pushed her career point total to 40, now 10th all-time at La Salle.

Rhode Island (4-8-1, 2-4-0 A-10) cut its deficit in half with a tally three minutes later, as Ashley Evangelista scored on a header off an assist from Amanda Thomas.

Melissa Sanger made three saves in the game to pick up her fifth win of 2009 and her 19th career in goal for the Explorers.

La Salle will return to Philadelphia for its final home weekend, hosting Temple on Friday at 5 PM, and Saint Joseph's on Sunday at 3 PM, which will be Senior Day.
