Wisconsin men beat Northwestern
October 18, 2009
EVANSTON, Ill. - For the second consecutive Big Ten match, a Northwestern foul inside the 18-yard box late in the contest cost the Wildcats as Wisconsin converted on a penalty kick with five minutes left in the first overtime to stun NU 2-1.
The loss drops Northwestern to 7-2-4 overall and 1-1-1 in Big Ten play while the Badgers improve to 4-6-2 and 2-2-0.
Four minutes into the first extra session, Wisconsin earned a corner kick. On Scott Lorenz's service, the Wildcats were whistled for a foul near the top of the box and away from the ball. Eric Conklin took the ensuing penalty kick and was able to put it under the crossbar for the game-winner.
Just six days earlier, Northwestern appeared to have its game won at Penn State leading 1-0 in the final minute of play. However, the Wildcats were called for a hand ball in the box in that contest that led to a PK and the tying goal.
The Badgers struck first Saturday evening 34 minutes in when Taylor Waspi corraled a loose ball at the top of the box and was able to beat Misha Rosenthal to the match's first score.
NU answered back just over four minutes later. Peter O'Neill's service from the left flank was deflected and went to Kevin Valenta who was able to finish it on the doorstep for his first goal of the season.
Northwestern controlled the first half, out-shooting Wisconsin 10-3.
The Wildcats had an outstanding chance to take the lead five minutes into the second half. Jamal Habibi, who entered the match in the first half in relief of an injured Alex Horwath, was able to make a diving stop on a blast by Matt Eliason. The rebound came to Piero Bellizzi and he appeared to have an open net, but a Badger defender on the goalline was able to make the stop.
Bellizzi had another golden opportunity with under four minutes remaining in regulation, but Habibi was able to stop the junior's shot.
Neither team had any quality chances in the first overtime before the Wildcats were called for the questionable foul which cost them a result.
Northwestern finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Loyola Chicago at Lakeside Field.
