October 18, 2009
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Utah Valley dropped its final non-conference match of the 2009 season, 3-2, at Sam Houston State on Sunday. The Wolverines (3-10-1, 2-0-1) now play their final three regular season games at home in Great West play beginning with North Dakota on Friday at 4 p.m. MT.
The Bearkats (6-7-2) took a 3-0 lead before two late goals in the minute and a half by Katey Turner and Jaime Lyons put a dent in the final score.
The Wolverines had the edge in several areas on the stat sheet, holding a 21-18 lead in total shots, 9-8 in shots on goal and had six corner kicks to two for Sam Houston State.
Shelby Grissett gave SHSU a 1-0 lead with just under seven minutes left in the first half, scoring her fourth goal of the season.
Kirby Zak made it 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 57th minute before Natalie Pantel gave the Bearkats a comfortable 3-0 lead in the 81st minute.
Turner's goal, her first of the season, came with 1:14 left in the game and Lyons netted her second goal of the year with 29 seconds to go, but it was too late for the Wolverines to make another serious threat.
It was the final road game of the year for UVU prior to the Great West tournament in early-November in Newark, New Jersey. The Wolverines finished with a 3-5-1 road record in the regular season.
