Saint Louis women draw with Richmond

October 21, 2009
ST. LOUIS – Senior Susan Frederickson (St. Louis(w), Mo./St. Joseph’s) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the waning moments to send the game into overtime, but Saint Louis had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Richmond in an Atlantic 10 Conference contest Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens (7-6-3, 4-2-2 A-10) slipped from third to fifth in the A-10 standings with 14 points, one point behind St. Bonaventure and Fordham and one point ahead of Richmond (8-6-2, 4-2-1 A-10) and La Salle.

Frederickson’s tally came at the 88:03 mark. Taking a feed from junior Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word), who picked up her team-leading seventh assist, she rifled a 25-yard shot from the right side that curled inside the far post.

Saint Louis rode the momentum created by the dramatic goal into the first overtime by putting five shots on frame against Richmond keeper Melissa Pacheco, who made several tough saves. Meanwhile, the Bills allowed no shots on goal in the first extra session and just one in the second.

The Spiders grabbed the lead at 53:02 when Emily Dale registered her second goal of the season with an assist from Liza Koch. Koch’s line-drive shot deflected off the crossbar, and Dale collected the rebound just a few feet away and converted.

It didn’t take long for SLU to net the equalizer. Just 19 seconds later, Brazill fielded a cross from senior Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) and scored her third goal of the campaign. The assist was Hayes’ fourth of the year.

Kristen Stalter notched her second goal of the season at 57:53 when she intercepted a clearing attempt and slipped in a shot from six yards away. From there, the Billikens had  several quality chances to pull even before Frederickson’s goal did the trick.

The Bills finished with a 25-11 advantage in total shots, led by seven from senior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) and a career-high-tying five by Brazill. Stalter led Richmond with four shots. Pacheco recorded eight saves, while SLU senior keeper Amber Zdanovec (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) made two.

Saint Louis embarks its final regular-season road trip next weekend, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph’s Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. (CT) and Temple Sunday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. (CT).
