UNC Wilmington men draw with William & Mary

October 22, 2009
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite combining for 34 shots and 19 corner kicks, neither William & Mary nor UNC Wilmington was able to net the game-winner as the two teams settled for a 1-all tie in Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer action on Wednesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-2 and moved to 8-2-3 overall. The Tribe, meanwhile, fashioned its first draw of the season and stand at 9-4-1 and 4-2-1. UNCW is now in third place in the conference with 14 points and trail conference-leader Hofstra by two points and second-place Northeastern by a point. The Tribe sits in fourth with 13 points.

UNCW opened the scoring in the 19th minute of play when junior Indy Smith redirected a deep throw in by sophomore Christian Davidson. Smith, who netted the game-winner earlier this week against Towson, split a pair of W&M defenders in front of the goal and slipped his shot inside the near post on the left side.

W&M drew even with 7:29 remaining in the contest when Nick Orozco notched his first goal of the season off a short feed from Caleb Thomas. Thomas started the play taking control of the ball in the penalty area near the end line. After beating one defender, Thomas fed Orozco, who one-timed his shot just inside the right post for the tying goal.

Both teams threatened in the overtime periods with W&M’s Andrew Hoxie having a clear shot with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but his shot sailed wide of the target.

Despite owning a 22-12 advantage in shots, W&M managed just eight on goal.

Junior Brock Duckworth made seven saves on the evening for the Seahawks while Andrew McAdams was called upon to make four stops.

The Seahawks host Delaware on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., when they next take the field.
