Saint Louis women fall to Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA Senior Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) cut a 2-0 St. Louis(w) deficit in half with a late goal, but Saint Joseph’s held on for a 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference victory Friday at Finnesey Field.
Hayes scored her third goal of the year, and senior Susan Frederickson (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s) recorded her fifth assist, on a breakaway at the 85:39 mark. Hayes’ attempt was one of three shots launched by SLU in the final four-and-a-half minutes as the Billikens (7-7-3, 4-3-2 A-10) tried to mount a comeback.
Saint Joseph’s (7-7-3, 4-4-1 A-10) took a 1-0 lead on Danielle DeBernardo’s unassisted goal at 30:54. The Hawks made it 2-0 on Lauren Sawyer’s unassisted tally at 70:01.
Hayes, senior Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) and freshman Allison Hu (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) combined for 11 shots as the Bills outshot the Hawks 17-5 overall including 11-3 in the second half and 9-4 in shots on goal. Hayes had four shots (three on goal), Waeckerle registered four (two on goal) and Hu fired three (two on goal).
Saint Joseph’s keeper Christine Neal made eight saves, including five in the second half, while SLU sophomore Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) picked up two saves.
