BUFFALO, N.Y.- Teal Bunbury netted his second game-winner in four contests to lead the No. 1 University of
Akron's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Buffalo on a cold and rainy Friday night at UB Stadium.
Bunbury recorded his team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 13th mintue and the defense took care of the rest, recording its 12th shutout of the year. For the second time in 2009, UA did not allow a shot on goal while out-shooting UB, 17-3, overall.
Bunbury, who beat the keeper with a shot from five yards out, has now scored seven goals in his last seven games. It was his third game-winner of the campaign.
With the win, the Zips improved to 15-0-0 and 5-0-0 in Mid-American Conference play while Buffalo fell to 5-9-0 and 0-4-0.
Akron controlled the flow of the game from start to finish and didn't allow a shot by Buffalo through the first 44 minutes of the contest. It was especially an active first half for Anthony Ampaipitakwong, who led the way with three shots before the break, followed by Bunbury and Ben Zemanski, who fired two shots apiece.
UA's dominance continued after the break as the Zips were on the ball for the large majority of regulation. For the contest, Ampaipitakwong, Bunbury and Michael Nanchoff finished with four shots each to pace the attack.
The Zips will next return to Lee Jackson Field to close out the regular season. The three-game homestand begins Wednesday against Penn State starting at 7:30 p.m. on a game that will be broadcast locally on 1350 AM.
