October 26, 2009
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women’s soccer team honored their seniors, but were unable to record the win in the Ospreys final regular season match.

In recognition for the seniors’ on their day of celebration, all nine seniors for the Ospreys made their last start for the 2009 season.

In the first half of play UNF played mostly on the defensive with the team recording two saves as well as senior Rachael Howard notching two saves.

Coming off a one-on-one run down the middle of the field by Belmont’s forward Lauren Paynter, Howard, in the 19th minute, made an incredible one-handed stop to keep the Bruins off the board. Paynter was one of four Bruins to tally a shot in the first half.

In the second half the Bruins spared no time mounting an attack. In the 47th minute Jayme Trocino shot the ball past Howard, but what looked to be goal was taken off the board by her rough play, drawing the penalty inside the box.

Later on in the match the Ospreys put together a few chances to score.  In the second half UNF had the advantage in shots 8-4, along with corner kicks 4-3, but had trouble finidhing their runs.

With 16 minutes to go in the match sophomore Kristin Matteuzzi laid up a ball to senior Katelin Swift on the right side of the field allowing her to out run and gain separation from the Belmont defender for a one on one attempt. Swift’s shot was blocked by Sari Lin, but Swift was able to score a corner kick.

After UNF drew the corner kick, senior Caitlin Kovaks took the kick, placing a ball that was soon kicked out to sophomore Vladana Petricevic, but her one-touch attempt was saved by the Bruin’s defense.

The Ospreys were unable to keep the shutout against Belmont who was fighting to stay in position for the Atlantic Sun’s first round bye in the tournament. The Bruins goals came right after each other, scoring in the 82nd minute and then again in the 85th.

Belmont’s first goal came off of a corner kick. The Bruin’s Jessica Rix placed a good ball in the center of the box which rattled around in front of the goal, where Jamie Loftis eventually found the back of the net after the Bruins’ third attempt.

UNF after being stunned by Belmont’s second half goal was soon scored on again this time by Jayme Trocino who had a shot from point blank range, right in front of goal.

Though the Ospreys couldn’t find the net, they were able to celebrate their seniors’ careers at UNF and for all of their hard work on and off the field as Ospreys. Recognized in last years’ senior match was current fifth year seniors Howard and Elena Luzins.  This year Whitney Colburn, Kady Dearing, Caitlin Kovacs, Anna-Kaye Logan, Lauren Maze, Kristin Rhodes and Katelin Swift were honored.
