LIU men beat CCSU

New Britain, Conn. -Freshman Jakeem Johnson (Upper Montclair, N.J.) scored with 47 seconds remaining in overtime to break a scoreless tie and send the Long Island University(m) men' soccer team over Central Connecticut State, 1-0, on Sunday in New Britain, Conn. Johnson?s third game-winner of the year puts the Blackbirds at 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast Conference.

LIU played a long ball into the 18-yard box for sophomore Josh Maley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) who then ripped a shot on goal. After the attempt was deflected, Johnson found the ball and converted the shot for his team-high seventh on the year. It was the second time this season Johnson scored in the final minute of a period.

The Blackbirds best chance to light up the scoreboard in the first half came when freshman Elliot Kane (Tulsa, Okla.) blasted a shot in the 12th minute before being stopped by CCSU goalkeeper Paul Armstrong. Long Island tallied 12 shots in the second half but only one was put on net.

Long Island goalkeeper Adam Janssen (Toronto, Ontario) posted six saves in his second shutout of the year. For the weekend, the Toronto, Ontario native collected 14 saves for a save percentage of .933. Anderson had four saves in the loss.

Senior Adam Kelemet (Morris Plains, N.J.) and sophomore Steve Jakubowski (West Deptford, N.J.) both posted five shots each in the contest. Kane had a team-high six shots. LIU had a 12-9 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams hoisted over 20 shots each but neither could find the back of the netting for the first 109 minutes. LIU kept the pressure on the Blue Devils the entire contest with a season-high 26 shots. CCSU was unable to tally a goal despite 22 shots.

Long Island improved to 4-1 in overtime games in 2009. The Blackbirds return to LIU Field on Friday, Oct. 30 to host Fairleigh Dickinson at 3:30 p.m.
