Long Island women defeat Sacred Heart
October 27, 2009
Brooklyn, N.Y. - Freshman Katie Egan (Hanover, Mass.) scored with seven minutes to play and kept the Long Island University(w) women's soccer team's postseason hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart at LIU Field on Sunday afternoon. The goal was Egan's second in three games and helped the Blackbirds improve to 8-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Northeast Conference.
The goal came in the 83rd minute when junior Kayleigh Morgan (Harlow, England) shuffled a long pass ahead to Egan, who collected the ball six yards out and chipped the ball over the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Egan's goal came after LIU narrowly missed on a pair of attempts just minutes before. In the 81st minute Morgan had a header from four yards out stopped by SHU's Meghan Reichelt. Just over a minute later, Egan sent a cross into the box that was tipped clear by Reichelt.
Sacred Heart (7-8-1, 3-4-1 NEC) had a shot to pull even with just under three minutes to play when Lindsay Elliott put a header on goal, but freshman Jennifer Bannon (East Greenwich, R.I.) was able to make the save for her second straight shutout.
The Pioneers held a 12-9 advantage in shots on the afternoon and had a pair of dangerous chances in the opening period. In the 13th minute an SHU attack resulted in a free kick from 20 yards away, but Ashley Testani sent her shot high of goal. In the 23rd minute Samantha Kee was able to weave her way through the LIU defense and set herself up for a one-on-one opportunity, but her low shot was kicked away by a sprawling Bannon.
Bannon made five saves to turn in her seventh shutout of the year, which is tied for the second-highest single-season total at LIU. Reichelt finished the day with six saves for Sacred Heart.
The win pulled LIU even with Robert Morris for the final spot in the conference tournament. Long Island has one remaining regular season game, while Robert Morris has to face a pair of teams atop the league standings in Central Connecticut State and Quinnipiac.
The Blackbirds wrap up the regular season with a contest against Bryant on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:00 p.m. on LIU Field. LIU's seniors will be honored prior to the game.
