Wake Forest men defeat Davidson

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest junior midfielder Corben Bone tied a career high with three assists and four different players scored a goal as the second-ranked Demon Deacons defeated Davidson 4-1 on a rainy Tuesday night at Spry Stadium.

With the win, Wake Forest extended its unbeaten streak to eight straight games and improved its record to 12-2-2. Davidson dropped to 10-6-0 with the loss.

Each team battled difficult field conditions due to rain, which lasted the entire game. Most of the first half was played under a heavy rain, before tapering off to a light rain in the second half.

Wake controlled the game from the outset, scoring the first four goals of the match. Andy Lubahn got the Deacs on the board with a goal in the fourth minute, while Austin da Luz added a second goal in the 20th minute. Zack Schilawski netted the third goal in the 32nd minute and Ike Opara closed the scoring with a goal in the 49th minute. Davidson scored its only goal of the match exactly 72 minutes in on Alex Caskey’s score.

Bone led the Deacs with a career-high tying three helpers in the game. With the three assists, he brings his season total to eight and his career total to 33, which ranks second in school history, two behind Austin da Luz.

Schilawski tallied his ACC-leading 10th goal of the year. He now leads the team with 24 points on the season (10 g, 4 a). For his career, Schilawski has 36 career goals, tying him for third in school history.

Lubahn scored the sixth goal of his freshman season. He ranks second on the team in goals scored and is tied for third in points.

Da Luz found the back of the net for the fourth time on the season and also scored his second game-winning goal. With his conference-leading 11 assists, da Luz ranks second on the team with 19 points.

Opara closed out the scoring with his third goal of the season. He now has six points on the season.

Wake Forest used three different players in goal. Akira Fitzgerald earned his 12th win of the season, not surrendering a goal in the first half. Michael Lisch played the first 40:03 of the second half, allowing one goal. Austin Chelko handled the final 4:57, making two saves and not giving up a goal.

Chip Sanders suffered the loss for Davidson in net, giving up four goals and making nine saves in 80:44. Robby Goldsberry played the final 9:16 and made one save.

The Demon Deacons dominated the shot count, holding a 27-8 edge in shots, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. Wake Forest had 10 corner kicks, while Davidson had nine corners.

Wake started its attack off the opening whistle, getting a corner kick just 17 seconds into the match.

The Deacs had a flurry of shots in the fourth minute that led to the opening goal. Da Luz and Lubahn each had attempts that were saved by Sanders, but he couldn’t control the rebound on either shot. The ball eventually found Bone on the left side of the 18 and his shot hit off the right post. Lubahn gathered the rebound off the post on the right side and scored to put the Demon Deacons in front 1-0.

Da Luz made the score 2-0 with a beautifully struck goal in the 20th minute. Off a free kick from 24 yards out in the middle of the field, da Luz found the left side of the net for his fourth goal of the year.

Wake’s third goal of the night came in the 32nd minute. Bone played a cross from the left side of the field that found the head of Schilawski on the left side of the six-yard box. Schilawski finished inside the left post to make the score 3-0.

The Demon Deacons continued to attack early in the second half and scored for the fourth time in the 49th minute. A corner from Bone, found Opara on the left side of the six. Opara headed the ball into the left side of the net for Wake’s fourth goal.

Davidson ended Wake’s shutout with a goal 72 minutes in. Caskey’s free kick from 25 yards out beat Lisch to his right to cut Wake’s lead to 4-1.

Wake Forest hits the road for the final time in the 2009 regular season on Friday, facing Boston College. Start time against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m.
