Ā OREM, Utah -- Katey Turner scored a pair of goals as
Utah Valley and senior goalkeeper Tasha Bell blanked South Dakota, 5-0, in the regular season finale on Thursday at Clyde Field.
It was Senior Day in Orem and Bell, Athena Maher, Brooke Salcido, Adrienne Schneider and Kelly Vide were all honored prior to the game. Bell's shutout is her second of the season and the fourth this year for the Wolverines (6-10-1), who finished an unbeaten 5-0-1 in Great West Conference play.
"I thing getting into conference play and getting a couple of wins really helped boost our confidence and the girls just built on that," said head coach Brent Anderson. "Losing and winning can become a habit. When you're playing well and scoring goals your confidence just carries over and hopefully this will carry over into the conference tournament."
Schneider was credited with the game-winning goal after her 30th-minute goal on a Brianne Larsen assist accounted for the only scoring in the first half.
Turner scored the first of her two goals on a Nicole Archibald assist in the 67th minute, opening the floodgates for the Wolverines. Turner came back with her second goal seven minutes later after rebounded her own header.
Madeline McQuarrie scored her first career goal in the 79th minute on assists from Schneider and Larsen. Jaime Lyons then capped the scoring in the 85th minute when she and Vide played hot potato before Lyons punched it in right in front of the goal. Lyons leads Utah Valley with six goals and 12 points and has scored five of her goals in conference play.
Bell finished with three saves as the Wolverine defense again limited the scoring opportunities of its opponent. South Dakota keeper Jennifer Ogren had 11 saves as UVU finished with 28 shots, 16 on goal. The Coyotes (4-10-1, 2-3-0) had 10 shots, three on goal.
UVU dominated its conference opponents during the regular season, scoring 20 goals (3.33 pg) while allowing just four (.67 pg). The Wolverines also out-shot their conference foes 133-62 including 70-26 on goal.
Utah Valley will open the GWC Tournament next Friday, Nov. 6 in Newark, New Jersey against Delaware State. The Hornets are 1-14-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the East Division of the Great West.
