October 31, 2009

Dayton, Ohio - The 11th/16th-ranked Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer team (9-2-4, A-10: 3-1-2) saw their 13-game unbeaten streak end with a 3-0 loss on the road at Atlantic 10 foe Dayton (10-4-1, A-10: 5-1).

"In the first half, we played good soccer with the exception of defending Dayton’s free kicks," Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. "We created good scoring chances and defended fairly well. We just did not compete well enough on several Dayton free kicks. Now we have to get ready for Xavier on Sunday."

Dayton scored the game’s first goal when Ryan Handbury’s free kick from 30-yards out went to the far post where Alex Torda headed the ball into the net in the seventh minute.

After Dayton scored, Charlotte had an eight minute stretch from the 14 minute mark to the 22nd minute where they had five shots. Jennings Rex and Donnie Smith both had their shots stopped by the Dayton defense. Adam Gross, Justin Tucker and Rex again had shots during that stretch that were either wide or blocked by the Dayton defense.

In the 27th minute, Charlotte’s Evan James was brought down in the box by a Dayton defender which created a penalty kick for the 49ers. Gross had a chance to tie the score but his penalty kick was stopped by Dayton’s keeper Tyler Picard.

In the 28th minute, Charlotte’s Evan James took a shot from the right wing but it was stopped by Dayton’s Picard.

Dayton scored their second goal when Isaac Kissi put the ball in the back of the net off a Sonny Renner free kick in the 43rd minute.

Both teams finished the first half with eight shots.

Dayton scored their third goal when Peter Chilemena scored off assists from Evan McCreary and Handbury in the 48th minute.

Charlotte’s Luke Exley had a chance to get the 49ers on the board but his shot in the 50th minute was stopped by a Dayton defender.

The 49ers’ Isaac Cowles and Isaac Caughran both took shots during the final 16 minutes of the game but their shots went either high or wide.

Charlotte finished the game with 14 shots. Rex led the 49ers with four shots. While, Gross added two shots to the 49ers attack.

Charlotte concludes their weekend road trip to Ohio with a road game at Xavier, Sunday, November 1 at 1 pm.
