November 3, 2009
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2009) – Tadeu Terra scored his second game-winner of the year and the St. John’s(m) men’s soccer team clinched a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 2-0 win against Syracuse in the regular season finale.  Connor Lade added his first-career goal, while Derby Carrillo made four saves to post his second-consecutive shutout to lead St. John’s (7-2-8, 6-1-4).  Ryan Jones made one save for Syracuse (3-15-0, 2-9-0).

“Syracuse is very good on offense and is capable of scoring in bunches so I thought we played very well on defense,” said head coach Dr. Dave Masur.  “Earning the first round bye is fantastic.  We battled hard all season and I think losing only one BIG EAST game says a lot about our guys.”

The Orange had the first chance of the game, but Carrillo saved an Elliott Townsend shot in the 11th minute.

Trevor Chiduku had the Red Storm’s first two chances, but the midfielder sent a shot wide in the 13th minute and had a shot blocked in the 16th minute.

St. John’s, though, took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Terra scored less than one minute after entering the game as a substitution.  Walter Hines assisted on the goal, opening the play with a pass into the box before Terra rifled a shot past Jones from the left corner of the box.

Following an off-target shot by Sverre Wegge Gundhus in the 26th minute, the Red Storm went up 2-0 in the 30th minute on a goal by Lade.  The defender blasted a shot from the top of the box that beat Jones.

Looking for his second goal in as many days Hines followed with a shot in the 32nd minute, but Jones made the save.

Carrillo then made his second save of the game on a L.J. Papaleo header in the 35th minute and St. John’s took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Hansen Woodruff had a chance in the 56th minute, but Carrillo made the save to keep the Orange off the board.  Carrillo followed with a save in the 59th minute on a Mark Brode shot.

A blocked Wegge Gundhus shot in the 76th minute set up a corner kick for St. John’s, but the Red Storm could not capitalize.

With a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament, St. John’s will next host a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Nov. 7.  The first round opens on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
