Wake women fall to Virginia Tech

CARY, N.C. – Kelly Conheeney scored in the seventh minute of the first overtime period to lift No. 19 Virginia Tech to a 1-0 win against No. 10 Wake Forest on Wednesday afternoon at Koka Booth Stadium.
With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 13-5-2, while Virginia Tech improves to 14-6-0.
After the game was scoreless through 90 minutes of play, the Hokies broke the deadlock with a goal in the seventh minute of the first overtime period. A corner kick from Stephanie Hylton was knocked out by a Wake Forest defender. The ball came right to Conheeney who finished from 12 yards out giving Virginia Tech a 1-0 win.
The Demon Deacons had several quality chances in regulation, but could not tally a goal. Wake held a 16-14 advantage in shots over Virginia Tech, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Deacs attempted six corner kicks, while the Hokies had three.
Jill Hutchinson led Wake Forest with five shots, including two shots on goal. Kaley Fountain and Caitlin Farrell each attempted three shots.
The goal for Conheeney was her eighth of the season, tying her for the team lead. Kelsey Mitchell had a team-high four shots for Virginia Tech.
Amanda Barasha suffered the loss in goal for Wake Forest, making two saves and allowing one goal. Kristin Carden had four saves in earning the shutout for Virginia Tech.
The Demon Deacons had the first quality chance of the game with 24:30 remaining in the first half. Fountain sent a cross from the left side and found Hutchinson on the right side of the 18-yard box. Hutchinson headed a shot from 10 yards out that went wide right of the goal.
Wake continued to apply the pressure as the Deacs had another golden opportunity a minute later. Bianca D’Agostino lofted a pass over the Virginia Tech defense and found Hutchinson 1-on-1 with the keeper. Hutchinson fired a shot from the top of the 18 that went right to Carden for the save.
The Hokies had a good look at the goal with just over 20 minutes left in the half. Robin Chidester attempted a shot from 23 yards out in the center of the field, but her shot sailed wide left.
Wake had another near miss with eight minutes left in the half. A free kick was sent into the penalty area and headed out to the top of the 18. Hutchinson unleashed a one-time shot that sailed just inches wide of the left post.
Wake had a good chance two minutes into the second half. Fountain dribbled from midfield and fired a shot from 25 yards out on the left side that bounced just wide of the right post.
Virginia Tech nearly broke the deadlock with 38: 20 left in the match. Julian Johnson attempted a shot from 23 yards out on the right side that went just high of the crossbar.

Hutchinson turned and fired a shot from 12 yards out that Carden made a kick save on and sent out for a corner kick.
Virginia Tech had another opportunity with 11:40 left. A corner kick from Marika Gray found the head of Robin Chidester just in front of the goal line. Chidester got a head on the ball, hitting the top of the crossbar and going out for a goal kick.
Wake had a great chance with just a few seconds left in the second half. Sadow played a pass in that was headed by Caitlin Farrell at the top of the six. Farrell’s shot appeared to be going in, but it was cleared off the line near the left post by Kelly Lynch.
Wake Forest will now await its postseason fate. The selection show for the 2009 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament will held on Monday, November 9 at approximately 8 p.m. (ET). The show will be televised by ESPNEWS.
