Oregon State men draw with UCLA

Corvallis, Ore.- Sophomore forward Travis Sanchez scored his second goal of the season as the Oregon State’s soccer team plays No. 5 UCLA to a 1-1 draw in double overtime in Las Angeles, Calif. Friday night.

"It was a tremendous effort by our team tonight," Oregon State men’s soccer head coach Steve Simmons said following the match. "Playing 110 minutes at UCLA is a daunting task. Coming away with a tie and a point on the road at UCLA like this is a great step for our program."

Coming into tonight’s match, Oregon State had not taken away a point, three points are awarded for a win and one for a tie, in conference play on the road at UCLA since joining the Pac-10.

Sanchez gave the Beavers (7-6-3 overall, 3-4-1 Pac-10 Conference) a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on steep angled, close range shot from the left side past the goalie.

Oregon State keeper Steve Spangler tied a season high in saves with six saves in the match he achieved that mark one other time this season, a 1-0 win over Marist College.

UCLA (9-3-3, 4-1-3) tied up the match in the 43rd minute on a Fernando Monge goal with Amobi Okugo getting the assist.

From that point on in the match, defense took center stage. Spangler recorded five of his six saves in the game between the second and first overtime periods.

The biggest save of the night for Oregon State came in the 81st minute when an Oregon State defender was called for a foul inside the goalie box. UCLA’s Michael Stephens took the penalty kick and shot to the right of Spangler who made a diving save to preserve the tie.

"I’m very happy for Steve (Spangler) tonight," Simmons said. "He really stepped up and made a big play on that penalty kick. The UCLA player hit the ball well but Steve mad a great save."

The Beavers recorded 14 shots during the game and spread the opportunities around with nine players recording at least one shot.

Oregon State now travels to San Diego, Calif. to face off with San Diego State Sunday, Nov. 8 starting at 12 p.m.
