Utah Valley women win Great West championship

November 10, 2009
NEWARK, New Jersey - Katey Turner continued her offensive prowess, scoring her sixth goal in the last four games as Utah Valley defeated Houston Baptist, 1-0, in the inaugural Great West Conference Tournament Championship on Monday.

Turner finished with four goals and two assists in the three tournament games, giving her 10 points and making her the easy choice for tournament MVP. Joining her on the all-tournament team were seniors Tasha Bell, Brooke Salcido and Adrienne Schneider.

"I knew we had to be at our very best today for things to go our way," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "It's great to have our players getting recognition for what they've worked for and deserve. It was just a great team effort today. NJIT and the Great West hosted a great tournament. I've been very impressed with how it was run and I'm proud to be a part of this conference."

After a scoreless first half Turner wasted little time in netting her second game-winning goal in as many contests. She got a pass from Brianne Larsen, dribbled to the top of the box and fired past a diving Michelle Rich just inside the right post.

"I told her halftime that I knew she was going to score quickly because to that point she wasn't playing that well," Anderson said. "That's kind of the way it's gone for her but she got that ball and made most of it. I'm really proud of her."

Bell and Salcido led a defense that allowed just one goal over the three tournament games and, after Turner's goal less than three minutes into the second half, limited the Huskies' scoring opportunities.

The teams both finished with 12 shots on goal, with Utah Valley holding a 7-4 advantage on goal.

Utah Valley finished the season 9-10-1 on the year, ending the season 8-1-1 over the last 10 games. The Wolverines were also unbeaten in six Great West regular season and three Great West tournament games.

Jaime Lyons finishes the year with a team-high eight goals and tied with Turner with 16 points. The Wolverines return their top four point-scorers next year with Nicole Archibald and Camille Broderick joining Lyons and Turner.

Monday's win also allowed Bell, Salcido, Schneider, Athena Maher and Kelly Vide to end their respective careers on top.
