Boston College men defeat Duke in ACC tourney
November 12, 2009
CARY, N.C. – Sophomore Edvin Worley broke scoreless tie in the 96th minute by converting a diving header off freshman Colin Murphy’s cross to lift No. 3 seed Boston College to a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 6 seed Duke in the Wednesday afternoon quarterfinals of the 23rd Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park.
BC (12-7) will play the winner of Wednesday evening’s quarterfinal match between No. 2 seed North Carolina and No. 7 seed NC State on Friday, Nov.13 at 8 p.m.
Goals were hard to come by as the match got under way amidst heavy rains and high winds.
Worley had perhaps each of the Eagles’ top two scoring opportunities, the first of which came very early in the contest but his right-footed shot from 12 yards went wide of the net. The second was set up by Murphy and freshman Charlie Rugg for the overtime gamewinner.
The Eagles’ winning shot was set up when Rugg challenged Duke goalkeeper James Belshaw (two saves) and swung a pass to teammate Colin Murphy, who lofted a cross that Worley headed in for the winning goal.
BC outshot the Blue Devils, 12-7, with a 7-5 edge in the second half and 2-1 edge in 5 minutes, 30 seconds of overtime play.
All-Conference goalkeeper Justin Luthy recorded one save in earning his eighth shutout of the season.
Duke, which is ranked 15th in the NSCAA poll, falls to 12-6 with the loss.
