Siena looking to complete perfect season
October 14, 2010
One hundred bucks to the first person who can name the only remaining undefeated and untied women’s college program in Division I …
If you had Siena College, you’re correct! Now leave your name and address and I’ll get the check in the mail – just don’t cash it until the 1st.
Truth is, no one outside of Siena College would guess Siena College; check that, Siena wouldn’t even guess itself. But here they are - with a perfect mark of 12-0-0 heading into Friday night’s contest at Canisius - front and center, making us take notice like the former nerd who blossomed into a looker overnight.
“It’s a little bit of a surprise,” admitted Siena coach Steve Karbowski. “In soccer the best team doesn’t always win and most of our matches have been decided by one goal. We just keep coming out on top.”
Brittany PfaffIn all, eight of the team’s matches have been one-goal games. And in a game that can sometimes be fluky, to have won every one of them is darn near miraculous.
That’s not to suggest that Siena is on some streak of dumb luck. Far from it. This has been brewing for a couple of years now - you just didn’t know about it.
The Saints (as they’re called) are located in Loudonville, New York. They play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference against teams like defending conference champion Loyola (MD) and Marist, and have compiled an overall record of 37-7-4 over the past three seasons.
Though the program has never reached an NCAA Tournament, Siena was positioned to do just that the last two years before twice being tripped up in the MAAC Tournament.
“We look forward to trying to change that,” said senior Captain Tabitha Tice. “Winning in the regular season brings confidence, and that’s why our start has been so huge. Our ultimate goal is to win the MAAC Championship.”
And in the process, the Saints are achieving a few milestones along the way. No. 32 in our Tournament Ranking, they’re one win away from tying the program’s single-season record for wins.
The Saints are an explosive group with scorers galore. Tice, freshman Brittany Pfaff and junior Ashleigh Barone are all tied for the lead in goals with seven.
Then there are players Caitlin Cahalan, Lindsay Tegas and Cara Riley who are also all capable of turning a match around in a hurry.
Siena has been on the ropes more than once this season, but with all that firepower they’re just hard to put away. And they have a knack for flurrying at the finish too, outscoring opponents 23-8 in second half play this year.
“We can score from anywhere at any time,” Tice said. “We have great finishers and a lot of players who can come in and be dangerous.”
And this is the part of the proceedings where things get dangerous for the Siena College.
See, now they have a new opponent on the schedule called expectations. People are taking notice to what the Saints are accomplishing; the crowds are bigger, professors are patting them on the back and reporters are showing up to practice.
Siena College is the last undefeated team standing – with six regular season games left and the MAAC Conference tourney, can they finish perfect?
“It can happen,” Karbowski said. “It will be a tough challenge with the schedule we have, but we should have a chance in each of our games. As long as we keep doing what we’re doing we’ll be fine.”
