Quarters set; Newquist Player of the Week
November 28, 2011

The NCAA Men’s College Tournament now moves on to the elite eight, and this is reflected in our updated Tournament 48 National Ranking. Meanwhile, Trevor Newquist of St. Mary's is our Player of the Week, highlighting our Team of the Week selection.

The Tournament 48 National Ranking is a weekly effort to project the NCAA Tournament field. It reverts to a status update of the field as reflected in weekly results once the tournament actually begins.

North Carolina’s Billy Schuler scored an overtime winner to lift Carlos Somoano’s Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory over Indiana. The Hoosiers were unable to muster a shot on goal for the duration of the contest.

The Tar Heels, once again #1 in our ranking, will host tournament Cinderella St. Mary's of the West Coast Conference. Trevor Newquist scored an overtime winner, his 2nd goal of the match, to lift the Gaels to a 3-2 win over Brown. Tom Mohoric also scored for St. Mary's while Sean Rosa and Dylan Remick scored for Brown.

Ray Reid’s Connecticut Huskies continued their impressive form with a 3-0 home shutout win over James Madison. Carlos Alvarez and Tony Cascio each recorded a goal and an assist for the Huskies, while Mamadou Diouf also scored and the UConn defense kept the Dukes from registering a shot on goal.

UConn will now face Charlotte, who defeated defending national champion Akron 1-0. Giuseppe Gentile recorded the goal for the 49ers, who got a shutout in goal from Klay Davis.

Creighton hit UC Santa Barbara with a pair of first-half goals, courtesy of Andrew Ribeiro and Bruno Castro, and held on despite a late strike from the Gauchos’ David Opoku, to advance with a 2-1 win. The Blue Jays will play South Florida in the quarterfinals.

The Bulls advanced via a 6-5 edge in penalties after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer with previous #1 New Mexico. USF’s Chris Blais made two saves in post-match spot kicks to lift the Bulls into the next round. A fracas between the two teams appeared to be beginning during the victory celebration, but the USF feed was unceremoniously halted just as it developed.

Last year’s national runner-up Louisville had to fight from behind against Maryland but ended up winning by a score of 4-2. Daniel Keller and Michael Roman scored for the Cardinals in the final 11 minutes to break open a 2-2 draw. Nick DeLeon and Colin Rolfe had scored earlier for Louisville, while Casey Townsend and Matt Oduaran scored for Maryland.

The Cardinals will face Jorge Salcedo’s UCLA Bruins, who defeated Rutgers by a score of 3-0.

Chandler Hoffman scored in the 1st and 49th minute for UCLA, with his tallies sandwiching a goal from Victor Chavez. Brian Rowe recorded the shutout in goal for the Bruins.

The Player of the Week winner is Trevor Newquist for his offensive and overtime heroics in the St. Marys victory.
