August 22, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State scored three-first half goals and the 21st-ranked Cougars blanked Idaho 3-0 to open their 20th Anniversary Season, Friday at Lower Soccer Field.
Freshman Brandi Vega scored the first goal of the match when she received a cross from redshirt-junior Mallory Fox and beat Idaho (0-1-0) goalkeeper Liz Boyden from four yards on out on the left side at the 17:15 mark.
Senior Kiersten Dallstream made the score 2-0 at 30:00 when she beat Vandal defender in the box and scored from eight yards out on the right side.
Just 2:27 later, sophomore Tiara Pittman took a pass on the left side from senior Elysse Van Leer and blasted a shot just inside the far post to put WSU (1-0-0) on top 3-0.
The Cougars dominated the match with 21 shots to Idaho’s four, including a 10-0 advantage in the second half, and 11 corner kicks to zero for the Vandals.
“It was a fantastic preseason, but there is nothing like playing on a gameday,” WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. “There was energy and excitement. The crowd was here. It was a different feeling. It was nice to have a clean sheet to start the season.”
