Oregon State women fall to Portland State
August 22, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. The Oregon State women's soccer team controlled possession throughout; however, was unable to find the back of the net as the Beavers fell to Portland State, 1-0, in the season opener for both schools on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State falls to 0-1-0 on the season while Portland State moves to 1-0-0 with the win.
"Obviously, we are disappointed we did not come away with a good result," head coach Linus Rhode said. "But, give Portland State credit. Their goalkeeper was outstanding tonight and they made the most of their chances. We had plenty of opportunities and just were not able to convert."
Dolly Enneking provided the only goal of the night as the Portland State reserve corralled a loose ball in the penalty area and scored in the 64th minute to give the Vikings the 1-0 lead.
Oregon State had several chances to get on the scoreboard throughout; however, Portland State goalkeeper Cris Lewis made nine saves on the evening, including several diving stops, to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.
The Beavers best chance to get on the board came in the final minutes. In the 89th minute, Melinda Ingalls collected a pass and took a strong shot towards the middle of the goal. Lewis made a diving stop as the ball caromed over to Oregon States Chelsea Buckland. Buckland had a good look at goal and fired a shot towards the lower right-hand corner; however, Lewis recovered to come across the goal and make another diving save to preserve the Vikings victory.
For the contest, Oregon State out-shot the Vikings, 19-6, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Buckland led the Oregon State attack with five shots on goal as Ingalls added two shots on goal for the Beavers. Amanda Dutra led Portland State with three shots.
Colleen Boyd made two saves in the loss as Lewis picked up the Oregon State victory.
