Seattle women defeat Utah Valley
MOSCOW, Idaho -- Seattle scored two second-half goals to top Utah Valley, 2-0, in NCAA women's soccer on Friday on the campus of The University of Idaho.
After playing 68 scoreless minutes, the Redhawks (3-1) broke through when Lauren Munechika scored on an cross from Jamie Coe in the 69th minute. Munechika scored from just three yards out when Coe's pass was deflected right in front of her.
Then, as the Wolverines (0-2) attempted to push forward trying to tie the game, Maddy Cartwright scored a decisive goal to give Seattle a cushion. Cartwright beat Wolverine keeper Hailey Brown one-on-one and put the ball in the net from 10 yards away. Kara Kuttler got the assist on Cartwright's goal.
"Overall I thought we played pretty good, especially in the first half. It was a marked improvement from last week's loss at Utah. We were able to do a lot of things we worked on this week," said UVU head coach Brent Anderson. "It's obviously not a result we're happy with but the girls fought hard and did some good things. We just made a couple of costly mistakes."
The stat sheet was even for the most part although Seattle did hold a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Redhawks keeper Madison Goverde recorded three saves and earned the shutout. Brown had five saves for the Wolverines.
Lauren Bluth finished with three shots for UVU, one of which was on goal with Kendra Buchanan and Kelsey Kimball also credited for a shot on goal each.
Utah Valley will stay in Moscow to face Idaho on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT. The Wolverines home opener is next Friday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. against Wyoming.
