WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest senior forward Jill Hutchinson scored her fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute to lift the Demon Deacons to a 2-1 victory over Loyola (Md.) on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.

With the win, the Deacs improve to 4-0 on the season, while Loyola drops to 2-1. Wake Forest is now 4-0 for the second straight season.

With the game tied at one in the 65th minute, seniors Kaley Fountain and Hutchinson combined for the game-winning goal. Fountain played a cross from near the endline on the left side. Her pass found Hutchinson inside the 18, and the Wayne, Pa., native sent the ball into the upper left hand side of the net to put the Deacs in front 2-1.

The Demon Deacon defense did a stellar job of preventing Loyola from having any quality chances in the second half. The Greyhounds only attempted one shot in the second 45 minutes. Wake Forest was forced to play a player down for the final nine minutes after Fountain received a red card, but Loyola could not take advantage of the shorthanded Deacs, failing to attempt a shot in the last nine minutes.

Wake Forest easily out-shot Loyola, holding a 12-2 advantage. The Deacs had five shots on goal compared to one for the Greyhounds. Wake earned seven corner kicks, compared to two for Loyola.

With her game-winning goal in the second half, Hutchinson has scored the game winner in each of Wake’s last two games. After not scoring in the first game, Hutchinson has had at least one goal in the Deacs’ last three contests.

Senior goalkeeper Laura Morse earned the victory to improve to 4-0 on the season. Morse allowed one goal and did not make a save in 90 minutes of action. Brittany Henderson suffered the loss for Loyola, making three saves and giving up two goals.

Wake Forest grabbed the early lead on freshman Lindsey Holman-Kelley’s first collegiate goal in the 10th minute. A foul on Loyola gave Holman-Kelley a free kick from the right side of the field, just outside the 18. Holman-Kelley’s kick from a tough angle went over the keeper and curled into the left side of the net to put Wake in front 1-0.

Loyola equalized in the 14th minute. Kelly Thomas played a nice ball off a corner kick inside the six-yard box. The Deacs attempted to clear, but were unsuccessful and Tessa McClenahan was able to get a shot off from inside the six-yard box. McClenahan’s shot hit off the bottom of the cross bar and went into the goal for her second goal of the season.

The Demon Deacons had several chances to grab the lead before halftime. Hutchinson nearly scored in the 28th minute, as she attempted a shot from right in front of the goal. The Loyola keeper was able to make a left-handed save and send the ball over the endline for a corner kick.

Hutchinson had another good chance to put Wake in front in the 40th minute. Hutchinson attempted a free kick from the 23 yards out in the center of the field, but her shot went wide of the net.

Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, September 4, traveling to Lexington, Ky., to face the Kentucky Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (ET).
