AMHERST, Mass. - Sam DeNormandie scored his second career goal as the UMass men's soccer team fought No. 24 Boston University to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Tuesday afternoon. It was the season opener for both sides. Chris Piekos earned the start in net for the Minutemen making seven saves including three in the second overtime.

The Minutemen and the Terriers are now 0-0-1 to start the season. UMass will head to Hartford on Saturday for a 7 PM kick-off.

DeNormandie entered the match in the 39th minute scoring his first goal of the season three minutes later. UMass earned a throw-in on the left flank where Lehigh-transfer Mark Dangleis flip-tossed a pass to DeNormandie who headed the ball straight into the air before redirecting the rebound towards the upper right corner as the ball came back down.

The Terriers tied the game in the 65th minute as Aaron O'Neal found Shaun Taylor with a cross from 30 yards out to the back left post. Taylor was able to catch the ball square with a shot redirecting it to towards the right post for the equalizer.

Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in the balance of regulation forcing the overtime periods.

Both teams managed two shots in the first overtime, but neither side could score. In the second overtime, it seemed the Terriers might find the golden goal after blistering four shots in a 10-second span just inside the 18-yard box in the 104th minute.

Piekos stood tall, however, to keep the game even making three saves, while a fourth shot was block out of the zone. Boston University's Ben Berube curled a shot from the top-left of the 18-yard box that was earmarked for just inside the back right post, but Piekos was able to get a diving, outstretched hand on the ball to prevent the goal. On the rebound shot, he scrambled to his feet making a kick-save which was immediately shot back on goal before Piekos made another kick-save keeping the game even.

Chris Roswess gave the Minutemen a bid for the win in the 109th minute on a counter-attack after Mark DeSantis carried the ball up the left flank sending a crossing pass into the middle of the 18-yard box. Ben Arikian chested a pass to a trailing Roswess who sent a low-screamer on frame, but Terrier keeper Hrafn Davidsson made a diving save to deny.

For the game, the Terriers outshot the Minutemen 19-to-13 thanks to a 6-to-1 advantage in the second overtime frame. Piekos made seven saves for UMass, while Davidsson made six for BU.
