Stony Brook, N.Y. - Despite a strong second half and outshooting Hofstra, 11-1, in the second frame, the Stony Brook men's soccer team fell to the Pride, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Freshmen Mehdi Belakehal (St. Hubert, Quebec), Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) and Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) each had three shots for the Seawolves, who outshot Hofstra, 17-8. Redshirt-freshman Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.) made four saves in his first career start for SBU.

In the season opener for both teams, Hofstra scored the game's only goal just over a minute in. Stephan Barea headed in Rob Youhill's service past Rogic to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage. Rogic made two diving saves in the first half to keep it a 1-0 game.

The Seawolves got their first scoring opportunity in the 40th minute but freshman Berian Gobeil's (Montreal, Quebec) shot sailed wide.

A different Stony Brook team came out in the second half and nearly tied the score in the 53rd minute. After a scrum in front, Crespi found himself with the ball from eight yards out but his shot attempt was saved by Hofstra keeper Greg Cumpstone. Freshman Cristian Quevedo (Smithtown, N.Y.) corralled the rebound but his shot too was saved.

Nearly three minutes later the Seawolves almost scored again. A flick from Gobeil over the defense found Crespi but his shot went just wide. In the 59th minute, freshman Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) sent a free kick into the box that found senior Damion Brown (Kingston, Jamaica) but his header too went wide of the goal post.

Stony Brook begins a three-game road swing starting with Harvard on Friday afternoon. Kick-off against the Crimson is slated for 4 pm.
