Indiana 2, Florida 1, FINAL
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA – #6 Florida was upset here today via an overtime goal by Indiana’s Leigh Anne Cummings.
The winning goal came in the 2nd overtime period with IU's Devon Beach, who had scored for the Hoosiers earlier, hitting a great through pass for Cummings to run onto and finish 1v1 past Florida goalkeeper Katie Fraine, who had been excellent through the match.
Beach allowed that there was increased room to operate in the Gators' end as the match wore on in the hot afternoon sun.
"It did seem like it started to open up a bit. I think both teams were getting tired, but it was still tough on both ends," Beach said. "When they attacked as well I think they had more space at the end of the game."
Beach added that Mick Lyon's Hoosier team is getting more proficient at combination play, particularly through stressing its off-the-ball work in training.
"We've been practicing these runs and gotten them in our minds to expect those runs and know what is happening," she said. "There is a connection there and we've been playing together longer now, so it's there."
Florida coach Becky Burleigh bemoaned her squad's inefficent passing, calling that the single biggest factor in the team's loss over anything else, including the absence of injured forward Ashlee Elliott.
"We never got on track. Our game is about passes and possession and we were never able to do that consistently. We have to find a way to win when we are not connecting passes. It wasn't just one person, we were struggling," she said. "From a leadership standpoint she is a presence that other teams have to deal with, but that wasn't why we lost the game. We lost the game because we didn't connect in our passes. It was unforced errors. They weren't really pressuring the ball, we just gave the ball away, and when you give the ball away, bad things happen. Bottom line is we just didn't keep the ball."
Beach said the win will help the 4-0 Hoosiers get the attention of the national soccer landscape.
"It was a big game and just a little hump we had to get over. I think it really does (gain the team some attention)," she said. "I think people expect more of us now. We are a good team and we keep improving, so we just have to keep working and I think people will notice that."
The matchup was intriguing with both teams coming in at 3-0, Florida ranked #6 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking, and IU enjoying a great start as a bit of an upstart on this year’s college soccer landscape.
The best chance of the early going came from Indiana’s Beach, who intercepted a pass in the Florida end, ran through the middle and unleashed a shot from 25 yards, but it was off target.
Florida’s midfield duo of Tahnai Annis and Lauren Hyde were winning a lot of possession for the Gators, but the final ball to create a quality chance was lacking in the early going.
Heavy industry from IU’s Carly Samp led to the next chance, with Samp and Orianica Velasquez-Herrera playing a neat 1-2 before Samp’s low drive was saved by Florida goalkeeper Katie Fraine.
Freshman standout Holly King is listed as a midfielder but she seems very comfortable in a center back or sweeper role for the Gators, winning a lot of balls Friday with intelligents reads and quick and confident steps.
Devon Beach picked up a yellow card for a challenge on a Florida defender, but the rest of the first half was without incident, including of the goal-scoring opportunity type.
In the 2nd half, Indiana was carrying the play to some degree early on, with the industry of Carly Samp making a big difference to her squad. Florida got a chance five minutes in when Tahnai Annis broke free on the right, but her curling ball to the far post was unmet by any teammates.
Just a minute later, Samp nearly broke through but was called offside with only the goalkeeper to beat. In just 60 more seconds, Samp was put through again by Velasquez-Herrera and this time was onside, but Fraine came up with a big save 1v1 on the sophomore’s blistering drive.
IU broke through in the 58th minute. Chloe McKay sent a teasing free kick into the area and Beach met it with a powerful header past the stranded Fraine for a 1-0 Hoosier lead.
A few minutes later the Gators were gifted an equalizing goal when a chip into the area from Angela Napolitano was dropped into the goal by IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell, making the score 1-1.
Campbell had injury added to insult a few minutes later via a heavy collision with Florida’s Lindsay Thompson as the two raced for a long through pass. Campbell won the ball before taking the hit, and was down motionless on the turf for several minutes before being replaced by Lauren Hollandsworth.
The Gators were starting to assert themselves and control the game at this point of the match, creating some decent chances in large part through the work in midfield of local product Hyde, Annick McBryar and Angela Napolitano. IU’s Jessica Boots, a club teammate of Hyde’s at Carmel United in days of yore, was also a strong influence for team in midfield, despite wearing a bulky-looking leg brace.
Tahnai Annis created a good chance for the Gators in the 75th minute, racing past a defender on the right before hitting a good cross into the area. Erika Tymrak dummied the ball before Thompson hit a drive from inside the area that went over the bar with only the keeper to beat.
IU’s Velasquez-Herrera generated a decent chance on her own a few minutes later before blazing a drive over Fraine’s crossbar. On the other end, Tymrak played Thompson through but IU defender Kerri Krawczak made a good defensive play. After Hyde earned a corner kick, Thompson headed a cross wide of net.
IU got a chance on the break but a good pass from McKay to Velasquez-Herrera that put the latter in on goal, was negated by the offside flag (Fraine made a big save anyway).
IU had some more chances on the break in the closing minutes of regulation but were unable to convert. Samp went down under a heavy challenge from behind in the area but no penalty was given and the teams went to overtime, prompting a heated on-field protest in the interim by IU coach Mick Lyon.
Hyde created the first good chance in overtime with a good win and pass to Thompson, but IU’s Jocelyn Moses hustled back to make a good defensive play and end the threat. Jessica Eicken and Annis then earned a corner with a good 1-2, but Hollandsworth punched away the serve and the teams went to the 2nd OT period.
In the 2nd OT, Tymrak tried a run through the middle but Krawczak intervened nicely for IU.
It was IU who found the key to the OT win with a lovely through ball by Beach for Leigh Anne Cummings to run onto and finish 1v1 for the Hoosier victory.
