CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte 49ers jumped to a 3-0 first-half lead and cruised to a 7-1 victory over Francis Marion University, Friday evening (Sept. 4) in women’s college soccer action.

The Patriots drop to 0-5-0 on the season and will stay near the Queen City to play at Davidson College on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Freshman forward Rebeccah Hoekstra scored Francis Marion’s lone tally in the 50th minute to draw the Patriots to within 3-1.  The score came after senior Angela Salem had her shot stopped by 49er goalkeeper Lauren Brown, but the ball deflected to Hoekstra who knocked it into the net for her first collegiate goal.

However, Charlotte answered with a goal less than two minutes later, and later scored twice in a 1:38 span.

Former Patriot Kirby Stenard, who transferred to Charlotte this past summer, scored the match’s first goal in the third minute on a header off a cross.

Charlotte outshot Francis Marion 36-4 and led 10-2 in corner kicks.

FMU sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham recorded a career-high 12 saves.

Whitney Weinraub led Charlotte with a pair of goals and one assist.
