Wake Forest women beat East Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest senior forward Jill Hutchinson scored two goals and an assist to lead the No. 17 Demon Deacons to a 4-0 win over East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.
With the win, the Demon Deacons improve to 6-0 on the season, while East Carolina drops to 3-1.
The Demon Deacons jumped out quickly, scoring a goal in the third minute. After a relatively quiet remainder of the first half, Wake Forest put the game away with three second half goals, scoring in the 54th, 68th and 69th minutes.
Hutchinson continued her strong weekend performance with two goals, her second multi-goal game of the season, and an assist. After an assist on Friday against Kentucky, Hutchinson finished the weekend with six points. She now leads the team with six goals and is tied for the team lead with 14 points.
Bianca D’Agostino added her second goal of the year for Wake Forest and also had an assist. Lindsey Holman-Kelley scored the fourth goal for the Demon Deacons. Kaley Fountain assisted on two of the goals to bring her season assist total to a team-best four.
Laura Morse and Amanda Barasha combined for the shutout in goal for the second straight goal. Morse played the first 70:44 of the game, making one save, while Barasha played the final 19:16 and was not forced to make a stop.
Wake Forest had the better of the play for most of the game, holding a commanding 15-3 advantage in shots, including 11 shots on frame. The Demon Deacons had eight corner kicks, compared to one for the Pirates.
Wake Forest applied pressure from the very beginning, taking a lead with a goal in the third minute. Fountain played a pass to Hutchinson in the middle of the field. The East Carolina keeper tried to come out and stop the ball, but Hutchinson dribbled around her and had an open net. She scored from six yards, beating three ECU defenders, who tried to keep the ball out of the net.
The Demon Deacons continued to get good looks at the goal. Eleanor Davidson attempted a shot in both the 17th and 18th minute, but the Pirate goalkeeper was able to make the save.
East Carolina had trouble generating offense in the first half, attempting just one shot. The only shot came in the 28th minute, an attempt by Amanda Malkiewicz that was wide.
The Pirates had their only shot on goal in the 53rd minute, an attempt by Bailey Wilcox, which was saved by Morse.
Wake Forest doubled the lead in the 54th minute on Hutchinson’s second goal of the day. D’Agostino played a high shot that the ECU keeper was able to keep out of the goal and knock back in front of the goal line. Hutchinson was there to easily put the rebound into the net.
The Demon Deacons got their third goal of the game in the 68th minute. D’Agostino’s shot from 14 yards out in front of the goal snuck inside the right post for her second goal of the season.
Wake added the fourth goal in short order, scoring just over a minute later. Hutchinson played a cross to Holman-Kelley, who had an open look from 16 yards out. Holman-Kelley blasted the shot into the left side of the net.
Hutchinson nearly finished off the hat trick in the 73rd minute. The Wayne, Pa., native had a head shot that went off the cross bar and ECU was able to clear the ball away.
Jen Kurowicki suffered the loss for the Pirates, allowing a goal and making four saves in the first 45 minutes. Berit Hansen played the final 45 minutes, giving up three goals and making three saves.
Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, September 11, traveling to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Classic. The Deacs will face Penn State on Friday at 5 p.m. (ET), before facing tournament host Connecticut on Sunday at 2 p.m.
