Louisville women beat Bucknell

Updated: August 30, 2010
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Louisville women’s soccer team continued its best start since 2007 with a 2-0 triumph over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon to win the 2010 Gamecock Courtyard Cup hosted by the University of South Carolina.

With Sunday’s win, the Cardinals improved to 3-0 for their longest winning streak to start a season since the 2007 squad opened with four straight wins. Bucknell dropped to 1-2 with Sunday’s loss.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Vancil (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North HS), who finished with four saves on Sunday for her fifth career shutout, was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the Gamecock Courtyard Cup after leading the Cardinals to a pair of shutout wins this weekend, including Friday’s 1-0 win over No. 13 South Carolina.

Offensively, Louisville picked up goals from redshirt freshman Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) and freshman Julie Casselman (Gatineau, Ont./Des Sources HS) in Sunday’s win over the Bison. Uremovich opened the scoring in the 19th-minute as she connected from 35 yards away for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage for the Cardinals.

After holding the one-goal advantage into halftime, Louisville pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 72nd minute as Casselman’s shot worked past Bucknell goalkeeper Sandita McDermott and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Senior Caitlin Rehder (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West HS) was credited with her second assist of the season on Casselman’s goal, while Shannon Leamy (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland HS) earned her first assist of the year.

Louisville finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots on Sunday, including a 9-5 edge in shots-on-goal, while the Cardinals also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Joining Vancil on the All-Tournament Team from Louisville were Rehder, Uremovich and freshman Christine Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS).

Up next, Louisville will return home to host Mid-American Conference foe Toledo on Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Cardinal Park.
