Colorado College women beat Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Colorado College women’s soccer team made its 2010 debut on a the road a memorable one on Friday.
With sophomore forward Brittney Lyman leading the charge, the visiting Tigers roared to a 3-0 non-conference victory over the University of Wyoming at UW’s Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie.
Lyman, who struck for the game winner just 2:07 into the contest, finished with a pair of goals that gave her eight in her last six outings dating back to last season. Sophomore Hannah Peterson also scored while freshman midfielder Madison Whitehead was credited with two assists for CC, which improved to 2-1 for the campaign.
“As opposed to our first two games, I thought we started out great today,” said head coach Geoff Bennett. “Our energy, our technical ability and our work rate for each other was outstanding from the get-go. We scored two nice goals early on and just built from there.”
The Tigers finished with a 20-9 cushion in overall shots, as well as an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, including a 6-0 advantage in the first half. Junior keeper Cailtin Hulyo needed to make only three saves while recording her second shutout of the season and 12th of her career.
After senior Tiffany Brown set up Lyman to give Colorado College its early lead, Peterson upped the count to 2-0 at the 30:05 mark after taking a centering pass from Whitehead. Lyman’s second tally came early in the second half, at 56:24.
Wyoming, which entered the match with a two-game winning streak, dropped to 2-3. Cowgirls goalkeepers Courtney Merkle and Meagan Burke, who each played a half, combined for nine saves in the loss.
CC resumes action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. (CT) game at the University of Oklahoma.
