Boston College women defeat Boston U

Chestnut Hill, MA – Boston College sophomore Kristen Mewis scored the lone goal to lead the Eagles past cross-town rival Boston University, 1-0, in a non-conference game at Nickerson Field on Saturday afternoon. No. 6 Boston College improved to 3-0-1, while Boston University dropped to 2-3-0 on the season.

 

Boston College finished the match with an 11-5 shot advantage. Both teams had two corner kicks, while the Eagles were caught offside five times.

 

Mewis, who led BC with four shots, broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute. Off a corner kick, senior Hannah Cerrone served a perfect ball into the box and Mewis one-timed it into the lower left side for a 1-0 lead. It was the second goal of the season for Mewis, while Cerrone picked up her second assist.

 

The Eagles almost took a 2-0 lead when Stephanie Wirth had an opportunity from the top of the 18-yard box but was turned away by the BU goalkeeper Alice Binns (three saves). Wirth had another chance two minutes later but Binns kept it a one-goal game.

 

BU had a chance to tie the match with 20 seconds to play. Terrier forward Lisa Kevorkian had the ball in the box but her shot went wide as the BC defense pressured the attempt.

 

GAME NOTES: Sophomore Stephanie Wirth earned her first career start and played a career-high 49 minutes … The goal scored by Kristen Mewis was her first game-winning goal … Goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni earned her third shutout of the season. She now has 27 career shutouts … The win gives BC Head Coach Alison Foley her 175th victory at Boston College. She now has 179 career wins … Boston College will host Brown University on Wednesday, September 8 at the Newton Soccer Field at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
