Ohio State men beat Binghamton

September 11, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A penalty kick was once again the deciding factor for the No. 11 Ohio State men’s soccer team as Konrad Warzycha scored on his third PK in a row to lead it over Binghamton, 1-0, Friday evening in University Park, Pa., as part of the Penn State Classic. The win moves the Buckeyes to 3-0 on the year, while the Bearcats fall to 0-3 with the loss.

Warzycha, who converted on two PK attempts in the Buckeyes’ last match vs. Buffalo, now has three goals on the season, already topping his total from 2009. On the opposite end of the pitch, Matt Lampson, the reigning Big Ten defensive player of the week, came up big for the Buckeyes with six saves in goal with four coming in the second stanza when the Bearcats exploded for seven shots.

Despite that late-game charge by Binghamton, the Buckeyes controlled the tempo for much of the contest, out-shooting the opposition 16-9 on the day with a 10-2 margin in the first half. Warzycha led the charge with six shots overall, including back-to-back pelts midway through the opening period that nearly broke open the zeros.

The senior midfielder’s first shot was blocked by a Bearcat defender, but he collected the rebound and fired again for a team save. Still unable to gain control, Binghamton allowed a third shot in 20 seconds, this time to Joshua Breto, whose attempt also resulted in a team save.

Ohio State would threaten several more times in the second half as Sam Scales took three of his five corners in the final 45 minutes. The Bearcats challenged, however, especially in the 77th minute when a three-shot barrage ended with a pair of saves for Lampson between the pipes.

With the PK Friday, the Buckeyes have hit each of their last 10 in-game penalty kick attempts, dating back to Sept. 16, 2005, and a miss by Kevin Nugent against Cal State Fullerton. Prior to Warzycha’s three, Danny Irizarry (2005-08) scored on four, Xavier Balc (2004-07) had two and Doug Verhoff (2006-09) scored on one PK.

Ohio State returns to action in the Penn State Classic at noon Sunday vs. Bucknell. The Buckeyes and Bison last faced off in the 2008 tourney in Happy Valley, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.
