St. Marys men beat Cal
September 11, 2010
Berkeley, CA- In the first road game of the 2010 season, the Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team upset No. 19 California 2-1 in double overtime from Edwards Stadium
on the first day of the 14th annual Cal Legacy Classic. The victory for the Gaels over the Golden Bears is their first win over Bay-Area rival Cal since the 1994 season.
The Gaels got on the board first with a goal from senior Jordan Grider, but gave up a late second half goal that sent the game into overtime. Reigning WCC Player of the
Week Trevor Newquist came through in the clutch again, scoring off a corner kick two minutes into the second overtime to give SMC the win.
“Our team showed what great character we have today. To rebound the way we did after giving up that late goal was tremendous from everyone,” said head coach Adam
Cooper.
After a scoreless first half where the Golden Bears (1-1-1) outshot the Gaels seven to three, SMC took the lead in the 70th minute on a goal by senior Jordan Grider. Grider finished from close range after a couple of short passes by sophomores Nathan Arambula and Trevor Newquist. The goal was the first of the season for Grider, and
third of his career.
The Gaels (2-0-1) outshot the Bears in the second half 10-7 but could not close out the game, giving up the game-tying goal in the last minute of play. Davis Paul scored
on a header with four seconds remaining in the second half to tie the game up at one a piece.
After both teams went without a shot in the first overtime, sophomore Trevor Newquist provided the game-winning goal for the Gaels for the second game in a
row. In the 103rd minute, Newquist scored on a header off a corner kick by redshirt junior Joel Fumia to give the SMC the win. The goal for Newquist was the second of
the season and sixth of his career, with four of those six coming as game-winners.
“We knew we could come in here and win and we played a great game. Now we recover tomorrow, prepare for UC Davis on Sunday and win our second tournament
of the year,” said Cooper.
Saint Mary’s outshot California 15-14 for the game, as the Gaels had nine on frame while the Bears had only six shots on goal. SMC junior Doug Herrick played all 103
minutes in goal for the Gaels, making five saves and giving up one goal. Justin Grider paced the Gaels with four shots, while Dylan Leslie had three shots with two on goal.
Cal goalkeeper David Bingham played all 103 minutes, making seven saves and allowing two goals. Paul led the Bears with three shots.
